PDP not dying

The opposition leader, Lyonpo Tshering Tobgay, refuted the statement made by the Lyonchen during a press conference that the People’s Democratic Party was on the verge of collapse.

In a press conference held on July 30, he said that the party did have financial problems but it was not dying.

Teacher accused of attempted rape

The Thimphu Dzongkhag court yesterday had the third hearing in a case where a 30-year-old teacher is alleged to have sexually harassed and beaten up a 10-year-old student.

Although the incident was reported to have occured on May 31, the case was taken to the police later. The principal of the community school said that the parents of the child had said that they would solve the issue internally. However, the mother later reported the case to the police.

Session ends, era starts

 

30 July, 2008 - With the blessings of the guardian deities, the enlightened guidance of the Druk Gyalpo, and the good fortune of the people, Bhutan continues to thrive through the ages, according to the Speaker of the National Assembly, Tshogpon Jigmi Tshultrim. The first session of parliament in the Democratic Constitutional Monarchy system of government, from May 8 to July 29, took some important steps through Bhutanese history.

Budget sparks off turf war

 30 July, 2008 - The National Assembly’s proposal to remove Clause 121 in the National Council Bill - “The annual budget shall be presented to the National Assembly for discussion and, after being passed by the Assembly, it shall be presented to the National Council by the Finance Minister” – was knocked down by the National Council on the last day of parliamentary debate.
