PDP not dying |

1 August 2008 The opposition leader, Lyonpo Tshering Tobgay, refuted the statement made by the Lyonchen during a press conference that the People’s Democratic Party was on the verge of collapse. In a press conference held on July 30, he said that the party did have financial problems but it was not dying. “Lyonpo Sangay Ngedup is still our party president and he is happy with the work that we are doing,” he said and held that the party still had a huge support base that was still growing. It was unfair for the Prime Minister to call PDP a dying party, he said. Regarding the funding for the political parties, he said that both the parties were equally in need of funds. Nobody from the PDP office had met the Prime Minister on budget issues nor had there been any ‘do or die’ meetings, as pointed by the PM, he said. PDP officials met the PM only to sign a petition. “DPT drafted the proposal and gave us the first call regarding the funding for political parties,” he said, showing a copy of the fax that the Secretary General of PDP, Lam Kesang, received from his counterpart, Dr. Saamdu Chhetri from DPT. According to the opposition leader, the PDP has an overdraft loan of Nu 20 Million from the Bank of Bhutan (BOB) and other liabilities of Nu 4.0 million. “We also need funds to maintain offices in every Dzongkhag to do the job of being the opposition party,” he said, adding that the party needed Nu 450,000 every month to survive. So far, some 60 PDP members have resigned and party offices in several dzongkhags have closed down. “Our coordinators are still there but we have reduced the size of the offices in other dzongkhags because there is not much work right now,” said Lam Kesang. In few of the dzongkhags, the remaining offices have reduced the size of their offices and the party has not paid the rental fees in all the dzongkhags, excluding Thimphu, for the last few months. Salaries have also not been paid to party workers. “It’s been five months since I got my salary but I am still working in the party’s office because of my faith in the party but it is becoming difficult for me to sustain,” said a PDP staff from outside the Thimphu region. According to Kuenga, the party’s Administration Officer in Thimphu, the party was banking on the renewal of membership, registration fees and voluntary contributions.
“The timing is difficult because the renewal could be done only after one year of registration, so we have put up an approval for renewal to the Election Commission of Bhutan,” he said. |
